Free Cataract Surgery in Kutai, East Kalimantan

On July 19-21, 2024, YPP held a Mass Cataract Surgery Social Service at UPTD Pratama Sendawar Hospital, West Kutai, East Kalimantan. This activity was carried out in collaboration with the East Kalimantan- North Kalimantan Branch of Perdami, the Indonesian Surgical Chamber Nurses Association, and the West Kutai Regional Government Health Office. A total of 159 patients were successfully operated on.

According to the Regional Secretary of West Kutai, the number of patients exceeded the initial target due to the enthusiasm of the local residents who wanted to get free cataract surgery treatment, the number of ophthalmologists and cataract treatment facilities is still very limited in the provinces of East and North Kalimantan, so people really wanted to take advantage of this opportunity. Access to West Kutai is also challenging, as provincial roads are still in disrepair and river crossings and trails are required to get to West Kutai.

It took 13 hours for the YPP team, Perdami Kaltim-Kaltara Branch and the Indonesian Association of Surgical Chamber Nurses to reach the location.
