Media Literacy Education at Sang Timur Catholic Middle School Kebon Jeruk

On March 25, 2024, Pundi Amal Peduli Kasih Foundation SCTV Indosiar (YPP), together with Akademi Televisi Indonesia (ATVI) held the Media Literacy Education program at Sang Timur Catholic Middle School. This activity was attended by 378 students in 7th to 9th grade.

The sessions focused on teaching students the dangers of pornography. With the knowledge gained from the program, students are expected to be able to use social media wisely and overcome the risks of pornography.

Kak Ningnong and Kak Sisca emphasized on the informed use of social media and the importance of reading, following the idea of Generation Z and Generation Alpha as the “Visual Generation”. They encouraging children to read, believing to be akin to that of performing exercises for the brain, leading to an increase in creativity and knowledge.

Apart from the media literacy education, additional materials were provided in the form of group assignments, presentations, and other activities in the Mobil Weli or Bookmobile.

Student representatives were reported to have been thankful for the literacy activities, stating it was very useful for increasing their knowledge, while also being fun.

Sister Katrin, a representative of the school, also extended her thanks for this very useful outreach, citing its benefits in teaching children how to use social media wisely and helping them understand the negative effects of exposure to pornography. It is very important for children to be aware, as pornography can be detrimental to children by disrupting learning processes, mental development, and concentration.
