Karina’s New Wheelchair

YPP handed over a new wheelchair to Karina Amalia (9) with the help of viewer donations at Cilamungan, Mandalawangi Village, Mandalawangi, Pandeglang, Banten. Currently in 4th grade, Karina suffers from hydrocephalus, spina bifida, which is the narrowing of the cervical spine and an orthopedic disorder that causes paralysis in the legs. It was found that Karina’s condition came as a result of her pregnant mother’s unfortunate exposure to a virus from poultry.

To prevent Karina’s head from swelling due to the excess fluid, doctors implanted a tube in her body to drain them. However, the draining process started becoming uncontrollable, leading to the usage of lots of diapers at the cost of around 1 million a month. If the diapers are changed too late, the waste that follows will cause an infection. This condition is financially burdensome for Jery, Karina’s father who works as an online motorcycle driver, and her mother who stays at home to look after Karina and her two older siblings who are still students.

This situation has caused Karina to grow accustomed to crawling and staying indoors. Karina only uses a wheelchair when going to school or for treatment. In fact, Karina had received a wheelchair before as part of a donation, but the wheelchair was badly damaged. That was why Karina's father submitted a request for assistance from YPP. When the YPP Team visited with a new wheelchair, Karina smiled broadly with her mother who showed optimism for her daughter’s recovery.

Viewers, your kindness and concern serve as the light of hope for Karina and her family.
